Methods for DIY Pest Protection

Follow some of our premium household suggestions to protect your home from most pests, including:

  • Mice and Rats
  • Spiders
  • Fruit flies and House Flies
  • Ants
  • Cockroaches

1. Control Pests: Limit Attractants

In the Yard

Tidying up in the yard can help reduce insect activity and prevent a problem from happening.

  • Trim short all the grass within two feet of the home perimeter
  • Trim hedges to be at least 1 foot from the siding
  • Trim tree limbs 5 feet from the roof

Plus, it can really help to pick up any debris around the yard, too. Any fallen berries, fruits, leaves, or branches, especially during the winter, are excellent places to forage for food or to build a nest. Rats, mice, or other small mammals are a prime suspect.

Place firewood and compost piles on a platform raised at least one foot off the ground and at least 20 feet from the house. You can install metal screening around it as well, but be sure that the holes are at least one-quarter inch small or smaller to prevent mice and rats from accessing it.

Be sure to place your outdoor garbage bins 20 feet from the house as well, and ensure that the lids seal well when shut.

In the House

The first thing to do is seal your food in sealed plastic containers. Do this with your dog food as well, since it is especially attractive to them. That way, your house is a little less tempting to them.

One good method to keep spiders away is to turn off the lights outside your house. When moths, flies, and other flying insects swarm around the lights, spiders, centipedes, and other carnivorous arthropods come as well. If you can keep the flies and moths and such pests away, spiders and carnivorous ones don't have a reason to invade.

Establish a cleaning regimen as well. This will help prevent cockroaches and spiders from finding harborages. All insects, bugs, rodents, or spiders are less likely to appear if you consistently sanitize the areas they might live.

The myth that pests only live in houses that are unclean is untrue, but cleaning does help keep them away because of the constant activity in the house.

Also, use an over the counter product to clean drains throughout your home. Flies and other pests, especially drain flies, are likely and able to lay eggs in the grime. Standing water is also problematic because it attracts them easily.

2. Eliminate Entry Points

Not every possible entry point can be found and eliminated, depending on the problem you're dealing with. Cockroaches, for example, are able to squeeze through extremely narrow cracks and gaps. However, blocking these usual places will discourage them to enter your home in Lubbock.

Use silicone caulking, steel mesh, copper wire mesh,

  • The gaps around utility pipes
  • Cracks and crevices around the home foundation and sill plates
  • Ground-level doors and windows. Ensure screens are in good repair and seal well and install door sweeps on external doors.
  • Large gaps in siding

In the gardens and fields, there are also row covers that can be useful for certain circumstances.

3. Household Methods to Keep Pests Away

There are plenty of useful products out there that can help you in the battle for your home. Most of these can be found in hardware stores, garden supply stores, or online.

Exercise caution when applying these control methods, since some of these products can cause adverse effects in children, pets, and the elderly

Boric acid

This handy product is used in a number of detergents and soaps commonly used in the home. It works something like cockroach lava by breaking down the joints and exoskeletons of arthropods. This product can be found in a dust form and is lightly dusted around areas of concern.

Diatomaceous earth

This product cuts the waxy cuticle on the outside of the exoskeleton, which dehydrates ants, cockroaches, and other arthropods. It can also be found in a dust form that is applied lightly to areas of concern.

Traps and baits

These can be found for many species, including mice, rats, cockroaches, termites, ants, and other pests. Be careful when using these. Live rodent traps and unprotected rodent baits are not recommended because they can cause a serious health hazard. A non-professional should never try to trap a live mammal.

Create a spray

You can mix soap and water together into a spray bottle and use this against virtually anything with an exoskeleton. Look for grease-fighting soaps and detergents. WD-40 is an excellent kill-on-contact solution as well, but it is much more expensive that soap or detergent.

Natural Solutions

Chemical pesticides are not as harmful as they once were, and the products that responsible pest control companies use today are environmentally responsible and family-safe. Pesticides labeled with proper use and ingredients are always the go-to for the best and most responsible professional pest control.

If you choose not to use any of these solutions above, there are a few alternatives you can turn to as well.

Essential oils

Essential, pure peppermint oil is scientifically proven to repel rats and spiders. Consider purchasing an essential oil humidifier and running it in problem areas.

Eucalyptus oil is also considered a useful deterrent for some pests and could be a positive repellant for spiders.

Natural Enemies of Pests

You can also find the natural enemies of many of these pests, like spiders, mantids, ladybugs, green lacewings centipedes, and other carnivorous arthropods and set them loose in fields or gardens to prevent aphids, spider ticks, and other problematic crop pests from an infestation.

Cucumber slices

That's' right, cucumbers. Because of the bitterness and chemical composition of cucumbers, they can reduce moths and silverfish and other pests.

Place thin slices on windowsills, but don't forget to replace them with fresh slices, or they will attract more problems than they repel.

Place thick slices in the ground around the house to prevent spiders and others from coming. You can allow these to decompose into the soil to prevent all sorts of pests from entering your home.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
