3 Tips to Find Bed Bugs

Maybe you've dealt with bed bug infestations before, and you're curious to learn about bed bug control. If you are, we've got what you need to help you learn to check for bed bugs yourself, whether you're in your Lubbock home or a hotel room. We want to help you be educated so you can ensure you and your family's safety and comfort.

Bed bugs can cause an allergic reaction in some people, although they aren't very dangerous. They can easily be a nightmare if you have them. Learn to perform your own inspection by learning the three most common things bed bugs leave behind in your Lubbock home or hotel.

Common Misconceptions

Are Bed bugs Dangerous? | Bed bug bites are the most common problem people have to deal with when facing an infestation. Many people endlessly worry at night and lose sleep, but the fact is, the worst thing that could happen with a bed bug problem is an allergic reaction.

If you're someone who would worry about bed bugs and lose sleep, just remember that mosquitoes and spiders are much more harmful, especially mosquitoes because of the life-altering diseases they can carry.

Mistaken Identification | These insects are commonly mistaken for small cockroaches, carpet beetles, ticks, or vice versa, so always be careful. Even bites aren't the best way to identify and diagnose a bed bug infestation because many other insect bites leave an identical mark: spiders, mosquitoes, and ants are just a few examples.

Night Lights and Bed Bugs | Some people have believed that leaving the lights on will keep bed bugs away, but just because they are nocturnal and feed on blood doesn't make them a vampire. Bed bugs are known to come out during the day if they are hungry enough, and no light at night will keep them from a blood meal.

Identify Bed Bugs

Adult bed bugs have a reddish-brown color, ribbed and flat abdomen, two antennae, an oval shape, and six legs. A large one might grow to be ¼ inch long. But when they've recently fed, their color is darker red, and they have a more ballooned shape.

Signs of Bed Bugs

1. Eggs and Molts

Eggs have an off-white color and are about 1 mm long. But the more obvious evidence you'll find is are the molts from growing bed bugs. Nymphs go through several substages before they reach adulthood and sexual maturity, and in order to grow, they have to shed their skin. These often look like crumbs or dead bed bugs that are lighter in color than a typical bed bug.

2. Bed Bug Excrement

Ideally, a bed bug likes to feed, about once a week or so, which means they spend most of their time hiding. Their excrement will be spread all over the places they like to hide (see below for details). Feces from the common bed bug looks like little dots of black pepper, much like a large period.

3. Stains on the Bed

Unfortunately, bed bugs feed on humans, which means blood will end up on the sheets, either when they void the remainder of their last meal or when the feeding spot bleeds a little before it closes.

Remember that bites are not definite proof of a bed bug infestation, but they are a good indicator of activity. If you're sure you have bed bugs and you receive bites every night, you definitely have a significant infestation.

Locations where Bed Bugs Hide

The most common bed bug hiding spots can be just about anywhere in a room, but they like to spend most of their time as close to the host as possible. So check the cracks and crevices in mattresses and box springs, under the sheets, in the seams of the mattress, and every crack where a tiny insect could hide. Look everywhere in and around the bed frame and along the wall next to the bed.

Before you deposit your luggage in a motel or hotel, leave your luggage in the bathroom or outside the room and perform an inspection.

Other common areas include the cushions of furniture, chairs, couches, and tables, the crack under baseboards, the molding around windows, and even wall outlets.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
