Signs Of Termites In Your Home

Termites are incredibly destructive but also very difficult to spot. A termite infestation may be present in your Lubbock home for a long period of time before anyone realizes that there is an issue. At that point, the damage has been done, and it can be very expensive to get rid of termites. That is why it is so important to be aware of the signs indicating that termites may be in your home. If you know what to look for, you might be able to address the problem before the situation gets out of control.

Discarded Wings

Although termites are hard to spot, the presence of winged termites, also known as swarmers, is a strong indication that something is going on. Swarmers are trying to mate and set up a new colony. While it is possible to miss the flying termites depending on when they decide to swarm, they often leave behind their wings, which is a clear sign that termites could be settling down around your property. After the flying termites find their mate, they shed their wings and then begin a new colony. Therefore, a pile of wings found in or around your house should certainly cause you to investigate the situation further.

As with any other living creature, termites leave behind droppings, which are also called frass. These droppings look like pellets and are quite small, only measuring about a millimeter in length. Unless you look closely, you may think the frass is sawdust. Termites can leave their waste just about anywhere in the home, so if you spot something suspicious, it is best to have a pest control professional come out to make a positive identification and come up with a plan to get rid of the infestation. Termites are not a problem that you can effectively address on your own.

Mud Tunnels

Another very visible sign of termites are mud tunnels or mud tubes. Mud tunnels help termites get to where they need to go and also give them a layer of protection. Mud tunnels can be present without anyone noticing; sometimes the termites build mud tubes underground or behind walls. However, if you look carefully, you may see them near the foundation or your window sills. It is also possible to have large mud tunnels that are extending up a wall.

Damaged Wood

Termites eat wood. Therefore, if they are present in a home, there will certainly be wood damage. You may find pieces of wood scattered from structures riddled with holes and termite damage. However, the problem is that because the termites are inside the walls, you may not even realize that something is happening until the damage is fairly severe. In fact, you may not notice what has happened or hear any sound at all. One way to check is by knocking on the wood to see if there is a hollow sound. You may also see signs of termite damage from the outside that something is wrong as well: the wood may look warped or cracked.

Termites don’t have the best manners, and when they eat, they make a noise that sounds a little like clicking. They are hungry little creatures, eating all day long, every day of the week. Depending on what is going on in your house, the termites can get louder as the day goes on as well. If you listen to your walls and notice a noise coming from inside, have someone come out to check your property right away. While there are certainly other explanations, you could very well be hearing termites having one of their daily meals.

Termites can cause significant problems to the structure of the home, and if they are allowed to flourish, the damage can be quite expensive to fix. While termites are hard to spot, there are certain signs to look for that can indicate the presence of an infestation. It is important to be vigilant in order to protect your home, and if you have any concerns, get in touch with a pest control professional to have your property inspected right away.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
